The Department of Psychology was founded in 1961 by Prof. D.N. Sinha,
who was also the HoD. It was initially housed in the Ladies' waiting
hall and the lecture hall, the laboratory and the store were created by
erecting wooden partitions within the hall. Psychology was not offered
as an elective course at the Undergraduate Level.
From these humble
beginnings, the Department took exponential strides to establish its
place within the academic circle. The Department was a pioneer in
starting courses which had 'Societal relevance' e.g. courses on
Organizational Psychology, Psychology of Social Change and Development,
Psychology of Self. In 1976, the Department was chosen by the UGC to
become a Centre of Advanced Studies in 1984. It came to be called the
capital of cross-cultural research' in Asia. The publication of an
in-house Journal, Psychology and Developing Societies' in 1989
strengthened the research arm further.
While M.Psy in HRDM ensured that
Psychology is carried to the corporate world, the Center of Behavioral
and Cognitive Sciences (CBCS) was set up in 2001 to further strengthen
the Department's quest for excellence. The Department has been blessed
to have eminent professors and Visiting faculty like Prof. Durganand
Sinha, Dr. C. H. K. Mishra, Dr. Prem Shankar
